On this day in history, California became the 31st state under the Compromise of 1850 in record time. Due to the Gold Rush, over 60,000 people flocked from around the globe to find the gold nuggets that were rumored to be dispersed across the landscape. This surge in inhabitants allowed California to proceed straight into statehood without passing through the formal territorial stage that previous states endured. On September 9, 1850, Congress accepted California as a free-labor state beginning its legacy as the largest economic force of the United States. Happy birthday California!
